, weakening the storm a little bit. but that's a player for us coming up. i will show you that. remember that. this is the storm and what's been happening, there has been high pressure that the storm has been moving around and it's continuing to pull off to the north-northwest. we have been saying it's going to make that right-hand turn. it's exactly where the high pressure builds. and sure enough tmade this right-hand turn, that will keep it from making a direct impact across the outer banks. then we see a trough, a really strong system, the first fall air mass of the year is pulling in. this is the jet stream. these are the strongest winds we have in the atmosphere, they are going to quickly become the main steering force for the storm, pulling it off to the northeast. we will have the storm here tonight. by tomorrow night, up around cape cod and the islands. so a very quick-moving storm that will bring very big impacts for the next 24 hours. >> all right. thanks very much. well, heavy rains already hitting the outer banks of north carolina. the national hurricane center reporting winds of

hurricane, winds us0 miles-an-hour. it is fewer than 160 miles from cape hatteras, north carolina. the storm is expected to pass near the outer banks within the next few hours packing hurricane force winds that extend 70 miles from the storm's center. nasa has been using photographs for the last four days. you can see how the storm has been growing and rolling closer to the coast and closer to north carolina. the first strong bands of rain have already started to hit outer banks of north carolina. it is hit and miss you know how those bands go. today police went door-to-door to make sure everybody had received evacuation notices because the state's governor warned once the storm hits folks who decided to stay are pretty much on their own. we have extensive team fox coverage throughout the night. rick leventhal on the east end of long island in montauk. monitoring the storm, first jonathan serrie in north carolina. i'm told the winds are come and go? >> reporter: they are indeed. the winds are picking up and continue to pick up at a slow, but stable pace. you said it was hit and miss as far a

of the storm, dodged a bullet is what she said to us this morning. no lives lost and what seems to be only minimal damage, obviously as you can see from here, some flooding. the main road was flooded for a couple miles because of a reverse storm surge. while the threat is over in north carolina, they are boarding up in new york, especially on long island. the eastern tip of it, officials in east hampton and other parts of long island are warning beach-goers that waves could reach as high as ten feet. so they say it is best to stay away from the water until the storm passes. in massachusetts, people are also getting prepared as earl approaches. while it's expected to remain off shore, it could still bring heavy rain, high winds and coastal flooding. forecasters have reduced the hurricane warning area for parts of the state. our coverage of hurricane earl continues with brianna keilar, live in ocean city, maryland. reynolds wolf tracking the laftest on the storm. brianna, you are at ocean city. we have been watching and talking to you since early this morning. i'm -- there you are. there is

england. the outer banks, they see a ton of storms. huge storms all the time. the trees and buildings used to it. eastern new england, the leaves are still on the trees and may do more damage out there on the cape. waiting for tonight to see how that plays out. radar, of the storm, ron in the last rain band from the storm and probably in sunshine in an hour or two. winds in delaware and maryland, no big deal. wildwood to atlantic city, gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. so really the mid-atlantic not an issue. as the storm heads northwards, notice cape cod far to the east there. that's why it's going to see the stronger winds. rain showers moving up into new england and long island. you have to be out there on the end of long island to be hit by the storm. as far as the stormwise, a different view. hurricane warnings for cape cod. large waves are now arriving and that forecast path brings the storm closest to eastern new england right around 10:00 p.m. tonight for the reporters blowing in the breeze out there. i think we have escaped this one. it is underachieved. >> all right. bill karins,
